Will Smith’s ‘Focus’ is Number One at Box Office

Will Smith topped the box office again with his film Focus, which opened at a little over $19 million. The $19 million opening is a far cry from Smith’s other blockbuster films. I Am Legend opened at $77 million, Hancock opened with $62 million, MIB 3 opened with $54 million, and I, Robot opened with $52 million. In fairness, Focus costs $50 million to make, and it is not considered to be a blockbuster movie like Smith’s other films.

Jeff Goldstein, head of distribution for Warner Bros., also offered a logical explanation for the low ticket sales. “There’s no question we got hammered because of inclement weather in the South and the Midwest,” Goldstein explained. During a recent interview, Smith said his box office numbers, whether good or bad, will never define who he is as a person. “I can’t allow the box office performance success, or lack thereof, to determine my self-image,” the actor told The Associated Press.

Will Smith has also had a successful music career using the rap moniker The Fresh Prince, and he has released nine studio albums. Some of these albums include He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper, Code Red, Big Willie Style, Willennium, and Born to Reign. The rapper has won four Grammy Awards, including the first ever Grammy award for Best Rap Performance. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won for “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” but they didn’t attend the ceremony because the rap category was not televised. All of the rappers who were nominated in the Best Rap Performance category participated in the Grammy boycott, including the female rap duo Salt-N-Pepa

This year, the rap category was also a huge topic at the Grammy Awards. Just like the previous three Grammy Award shows, the hip hop categories were absent during the show’s live broadcast. All of the rap nominees and winners are a part of the Grammy’s pre-telecast ceremony, which takes place before the show airs. Out of the seventy-plus awards that are given out each year, nine awards are televised during the live broadcast. Pop music, which is considered to be the most important genre, receives three of the nine televised categories. The rest of the three-hour show is allotted for the artist’s performances. This year’s Grammy Awards had twenty-three performances, which included performances from Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Madonna, and AC/DC.
