Rapper Ty Dolla $ign teamed up with rising talents Charli XCX and Tinashe to release a new single, “Drop That Kitty.” The song is an urban-inspired dance number produced by Stargate and Cashmere Cat that features Charli on the chorus, Tinashe on the hook, and Ty on the verses. Lyrically, the song is about dancing in the clubs and teasing viewers with salacious choreography. Ty Dolla $ign confirmed that he had recorded with the women in January; however, rumors began circulating about the track last week when photos leaked of the trio on the set of a music video for the single. After releasing the song to Ty Dolla $ign’s YouTube channel, the trio released the song on iTunes at midnight on February 17, 2015.
2014 was a big year for Charli XCX as the UK singer-songwriter experienced her first major success with a solo release on her single, “Boom Clap.” The song, which was originally written by Charli for Hilary Duff, was featured on the soundtrack for the emotional The Fault In Our Stars. Coupled with her high profile feature on Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” Charli was able to capitalize on the attention when she released her second album, the punk-inspired Sucker, which peaked at Number 28 on the Billboard 200. This was Charli’s first entry on the charts and signified strong sales for the musician. Currently, the singer is supporting Sucker’s third single – the dance-heavy “Doing It,” which features vocals from Rita Ora and will be embarking upon the fourth leg of Katy Perry’s Prismatic World Tour.
Tinashe also released her debut album, Aquarius, in 2014. The Los Angeles-based musician entered the entertainment industry as a model and actress at a young age before releasing a series of mixtapes in 2012 that earned her a record deal with RCA Records. Tinashe’s single, “2 On,” was well received by the public, and the musician partnered up with Nick Jonas on a remix for his single, “Jealous.” With her cool production and impressive choreography, the singer has made waves, and she is currently working on her second album.
Ty’s first significant release was his 2010 collaboration with TG on “Toot It and Boot It.” After experiencing success with the single, Ty found himself in demand as a writer, producer, and collaborator. In 2012 Ty signed with Atlantic Records and released a series of mixtapes and extended plays and is currently finalizing his debut full-length album, Free TC, on which “Drop That Kitty” will be included.
