Top 5 Ways to Speed Up Your Metabolism

Metabolism is a process that occurs in the body where food and drink get converted into energy. Maintaining a functioning metabolism is very important – probably more important than more people realize. Some days there is no time to fit in a workout during the week. People are so busy these days, and it may be hard to workout for even thirty minutes. If only there were 25 hours in a day, so much more could be accomplished.

There are days when it’s too hectic to pay that much attention to health and fitness. That is where our lovely metabolism comes in. What many people wonder is this: how do I speed up my metabolism? Here are our top five tips.

Number Five: Eat food. That’s right, I said eat food! Foods that speed up your metabolism, that is. Here are some foods that will help your metabolism and also keep you satisfied: grapefruits, yogurt, almonds, turkey, spinach and apples are some great foods to rev up that metabolism.

Number Four: Drink green tea. In my opinion, this is one of easiest ways to boost your metabolism. Green tea has so many health benefits and is an excellent source of antioxidants. Drinking green tea also speeds up the oxidation of unhealthy fats and slightly raises metabolic rates. Try drinking one or two cups of green tea every day and you could see your metabolism soar.

Number Three: Eat small meals. Your metabolism will function better if you try to eat six smalls meals every two to three hours rather than eating three large meals throughout the day. This will prevent your body from going into “starvation mode.” The body rebels by burning muscle instead of fat in starvation mode.

Number Two: Get enough sleep. Research shows that lack of sleep negatively affects the way our body metabolizes carbohydrates. Aim to get at least seven to eight hours per night, no matter what.

Number One: Start training with weights. If you have enough time to hit the gym, I would suggest doing a quick detour in the weight room before hitting the treadmill. Lifting weights speeds up your metabolism so you can continue burning calories, even when you are sleeping! How great is that? Muscle weighs more than fat, so muscle burns more calories, which helps speed up your metabolism.
