When it comes to art and paintings, there is something for everyone. Some people like landscapes, some prefer portraits, others surreal imagery, but most puzzling of all is some of the ridiculously overpriced and simple art out there. Here is part one of our list.
Number Ten: ‘Blood Red Mirror’ by Gerhard Richter, the Least Expensive of the Expensive Paintings
This man is one of Germany’s most famous artists, known for creating work full of controversy and ambiguity. One of his paintings recently sold for 20.8 million, but the one on our list went for just a measly $1.3 million at an auction back in 2008. I definitely see the “ambiguity” with this piece.
Number Nine: ‘The Concept of Space, Waiting’ by Lucio Fontana
Well, at least the name sounds kind of deep. This artist is Italian and his work includes paintings as well as sculptures. Apparently he started am artistic trend called “sliced pictures”. This plain picture, cut through with slices, sold in London at an auction for an unbelievable $1.5 million.
Number Eight: ‘Green Blot’ by Ellsworth Kelly
Kelly is an American artist who also does sculptures. This ridiculously expensive piece of art is exactly what it sounds like it would be by the name of it, a big green blot in the middle of a canvas. It sold for $1.6 million.
Number Seven: ‘Untitled’ by Blinky Palermo
This German artist is known for not using much variation in his color schemes, which isn’t hard to believe while looking at this one. The idea is to allow the viewer to observe colors in neat, clean ways. He has called every painting “Untitled” and they apparently all look quite similar to this one, which sold for a modest sum of $1.7 million.
Number Six: ‘Cowboy’ by Ellsworth Kelly
Ellsworth Kelly made it onto our list twice, so I’m assuming this artist is doing something right. Inspired by a 4 year period of “art of sharp edges” study, this painting went at the price of $1.7 million.
