This year’s Glastonbury event featured performances by Florence and the Machine, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Lionel Richie, The Waterboys, The Chemical Brothers, Deadmau5, Motörhead, and more. Perhaps the most talked about performance was Kanye West’s set on Saturday night. Just as the rapper was about to start performing “Black Skinhead,” someone crashed the stage and interrupted his performance. The “stage crasher” was identified as British comedian Simon Brodkin. The comedian’s stage crash gained a lot of attention on social media, and most people felt West got what he deserved. It’s rather hard to sympathize with West, considering he’s no stranger to “raining on people’s parades.” The rapper interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Music Video Awards, after he felt Beyonce should have won the Music Video of the Year honor. He also semi-disrupted Beck’s Grammy-winning speech at this year’s awards show; the rapper did apologize to both artists for his actions.
Brodkin stated that he crashed the stage in order to lend a hand to those who felt West shouldn’t have headlined Glastonbury. The petition that aimed to get West removed from Glastonbury gained over 100,000 signatures, but the attempt to get him axed from the festival was not successful. The rapper answered his naysayers with an opening performance of “Stronger,” which electrified the crowd. While some people were very impressed by West’s set, others felt he underperformed. Even though his set list included songs such as “All Falls Down,” “Touch the Sky,” and “All the Lights,” West failed to engage with the audience for most of his performance. Overall, most music critics gave West’s performance an average rating, which is a far cry from his claim that he is the biggest rock star in the world.
