The Joshua tree that was featured on the cover of U2‘s The Joshua Tree album, has been deliberately vandalized. The spot where the tree stands has become monumental in its own right, and fans travel from all around the world to take pictures of the tree. A fan reported on U2’s website forum that the tree was missing a limb. “I’ve been visiting U2’s Joshua Tree in the California desert for nearly twenty years now. I made my proverbial yearly hike out to the tree with my dog, only to find out that some hack decided it was a bright idea to take a hacksaw to one of the tree’s limbs,” the fan wrote on the forum.
There are two logical theories to support how the Joshua tree was damaged. One theory suggests someone cut the tree limb for a souvenir, and the other theory suggests someone accidentally broke the limb when they were sitting on it. While there is not any evidence to prove the limb was cut down with malicious intentions, many people are requesting that people just leave the tree alone so others can enjoy it.
In other news, U2’s 19-city Innocence Experience Tour will go on as planned. Bono‘s bike accident in New York almost cost the band their tour, which is scheduled to kick off in May. The rocker suffered multiple injuries from the accident including a fracture to his left eye socket, shoulder blade, left elbow, and hand. “Recovery has been more difficult than I thought… As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again,” Bono stated on U2’s website at the beginning of the year.
While the U2 frontman was highly concerned he was not going to be physically ready to tour in May, it now seems the rocker has made a full recovery. The band recently added four dates to their tour stop in Barcelona, which will be on October 5th, 6th, 9th, and 10th. To date, sixty of the band’s concerts are sold out, and so U2 will do multiple dates in several cities on the tour. These cities include four stops in Los Angeles, Montreal, Boston, five stops in Chicago, and seven stops in New York.
