Tonopah came into existence when Jim Butler discovered deposits of silver there in 1900.
After the discovery, a mining industry was quickly set up. It was such a blessed place that in 1913, in just one year they were able to extract $10 million worth of gold, silver, copper and lead from the area.

But similar to most of the gold rush industries, the deposits started getting exhausted. During 1921, a sharp decline was observed in the extraction. Everything got ceased till 1947.
The mining industry left the small population of Tonopah with abandoned buildings and mines. Tonopah went on to getting more deserted year by year.

Opened in 1901, the Tonopah cemetery accommodated all the deceased ones in the newly found mining center. The burial plots are marked by simple wooden crosses, some has stumps with crude plates for commemoration.
