Swingers, or those who engaged in consensual non-monogamous relationships, are relationships where committed partners agree not to only have sex with each other. This is becoming a topic that is being talked about more and more often, but there’s still a lot to learn about it. Here’s part one of our list of facts.
Number Fifteen: Swingers May Be More Common than Gay People
According to statistics, two percent of women in the US consider themselves lesbian, and about four percent of men call themselves gay. In certain large online polls, between four and five percent of respondents have said that they are currently in a swinging relationship.
Number Fourteen: Lots of People are Curious
600 people in monogamous relationships were asked if they would ever consider this alternative. Up to 40 percent of males said they would try it if their partner was okay with it, and 25 percent of women said the same.
Number Thirteen: It’s on a Continuum
Some people say that humans are non-monogamous by nature while others insist that we are meant for one on one relationships. New data published more recently suggests, however, that these personality traits are more likely to range on a spectrum, like being an introvert or extrovert for example.
Number Twelve: Strong Stigma
This lifestyle is not very accepted. People who engage in “swinger” type of lifestyles are not only thought of as worse in subjects dealing with relationships (commitment, romance, trust) but are judged as worse at general things such as generosity or kindness. Often times swingers even view themselves as worse than monogamists.
Number Eleven: It Has Roots in WWII
It first occurred in elite groups of US military members, namely the Air force. The men were rich enough to have their wives move close to their bases, and since they had such high fatality rates, “wife-swapping” become accepted. This custom then spread throughout surrounding areas.
Number Ten: They Tend to Be More Liberal
It may seem obvious that folks of this category are more liberal in areas such as divorce, homosexuality, premarital sex, and other things. Later studies have also shown that they also tend to be less racist or sexist than typical people.
Number Nine: It Could Strengthen Relationships
Though it sounds surprising, it’s been said by swingers that having this type of openness can revive a lifeless relationship and improve trust. We hope you enjoyed part one of our list. Stay tuned for part two, coming soon!
