After the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon enlisted an abundance of musicians to sing an a Capella version of Queen‘s “We Are The Champions.” Christina Aguilera, Usher, Meghan Trainor, Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, Carrie Underwood, One Direction, Blake Shelton, The Roots, and more performed the classic rock song on Sunday night. The recording artists were featured on a multi-colored screen, resembling The Brady Bunch opening credits. “We Are The Champions” was written by Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury in 1977. The song became a big hit worldwide, charting in several countries around the world. “We Are The Champions” has become the unofficial anthem for sporting championships on all levels of sports.
Just like “We Are The Champions,” Fall Out Boy‘s “Centuries” has become a sports anthem. The band recently addressed how much ESPN played their song during the college football playoffs this season. Some fans went on social media to belt out their frustrations. One person by the name of Joe Kaiser tweeted this message on Twitter, “I would say ESPN dragging Tom Brady through mud without proof is the network’s low, but it played Centuries by Fall Out Boy like 1,000 times.” Another person, Jessica Shadix, tweeted this message on Twitter, “If I had a dollar for every time ESPN played fall out boy’s ‘centuries’ I think I’d have enough to pay them to never play it again.”
Fall Out Boy was asked by FOX Sports if they heard their song being played during the football playoff games. “I watched it a little bit. It’s a little crazy to watch with your song in it so much,” Pete Wentz told FOX Sports. Wentz said he realizes the song being played so much had become annoying. The sports network then asked if the band would like to apologize on behalf on ESPN. “We realize that it was to the point where it was getting under people’s skin. Hopefully, we didn’t annoy you too badly,” Wentz jokingly told FOX Sports. The band also realizes the popularity of “Centuries” has helped the band become more recognizable as well. Fall Out Boy’s album American Beauty/American Psycho is currently Number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Only time will tell if Fall Out Boy’s “Centuries” will enter into sports anthem history like Queen’s “We Are The Champions.”
