Grammy award-winning Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor has officially given up social media, the reason behind this decision being that her active presence on Facebook has “attracted two frightening and sexually disturbed male stalkers,” that have not only stalked O’Connor but several of her fans as well.
In an official statement posted on Facebook early Thursday morning, O’Connor warns her fans, especially the diehard ones to “be extremely vigilant regarding whom you engage with on any fan page,” because they are the most vulnerable due to their “sensitive souls.” While this was meant to be O’Connor’s final social media post, she later took a moment to post a photo of one of the stalkers who has been harassing her fans.
The alleged predator, Francis “Fran” Morrison of Belfast, is said to have coaxed three women into private conversations with him filled with extremely disturbing sexual tones. O’Connor also warns that Morrison is extremely dangerous and is a sexually predatory groomer who is quite intelligent and very manipulative. She goes on to call him an “evil genius.”
She also took the time to lecture fans who are so “obsessed” with her that they would be willing to put themselves in harm’s way by associating with someone only because they claim to know her. She informs her fans that while they may think it is love or respect, it is not, and she implores them to work on their father issues.
Not only does she suggest fans go to their local police station to learn how to keep themselves and their children safe, but states that “you are extremely vulnerable if you are followed by predators familiar with the music business who know the type of sensitive souls you are, and you cannot safely assume that anyone is who or what they claim to be. All women on this page are also vulnerable to predators unfamiliar with the music business.” O’Connor discusses her wish that Facebook will find a way to scan for sexual predators who follow celebrity pages and mentions how much she will miss engaging with her Facebook fans.
O’Connor, whose most recent album is 2014’s I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss, has been in the news recently since she revealed that she will no longer perform “Nothing Compares 2 U” due to the fact that she is no longer able to emotionally connect with the song. In late 2013, she publicly called out Miley Cyrus in an open letter in which she warns Cyrus of the dangers of allowing herself to be sexually exploited. Not only does she tell Cyrus that “The music business doesn’t give a shit about you, or any of us,” but she also goes on to state that “they will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think it’s what YOU wanted.” The letter was the first of several correspondences between the two, each one becoming less friendly than the last.
