Sony and Adele on Course for an 80 Million Deal

After disagreements with her label, XL Recordings, on her third album, there is now talk of Adele securing a mega deal with Sony worth up to £80 million (roughly $128.6 million). The iconic superstar recently announced her third studio release, which will hit shelves next year. After the commercially successful 19 and 21, Adele is looking to take the world by storm again. The big question is, why £80 million? Well, Adele is currently one of the leading superstars of our time, and is also planning on starting up her own record label.

The “Chasing Pavements” singer has enjoyed huge success, and the release of 21 was certainly the icing on the cake. Her sophomore record cleared 30 million units in just over three years. It went certified Diamond in the US in November 2012. For an album to go Diamond after a 2011 release is mind-boggling, considering the huge decline in album sales. XL has been supporting Adele as far back as 2006, where Jonathan Dickins had since become her representative, and after eight impactful years, she has now decided to cut them loose. Although XL agreed to a three-album deal, disputes arose, and Sony used this to their advantage by trying to buy Adele out.

Adele has always been very outspoken, namely the stunt she pulled after winning the MasterCard British Album of the Year at the 2012 BRITs. During her speech, host James Corden had to cut her off due to broadcast issues. Enraged by his actions, Adele flipped off the camera in front of not only the audience at the ceremony, but the millions of people watching the award show at home.

Before announcing her third studio album, Adele confirmed that a world tour will take place next year. During her second concert tour, Adele had no choice but to cancel her final remaining shows after she was diagnosed with acute laryngitis around June 2011. That would not stop Adele from receiving an Academy Award for her contribution to the James Bond epic, Skyfall. Only a handful of artists have managed to win an Oscar and a Grammy award. Expect 2015 to be another captivating year enjoying the success of Adele.
