Snoop Dogg and Pharrell’s Project is About Weed

The world has known for a few days that Pharrell Williams and Snoop Dogg have teamed up again. Now, a serious taste of their collaboration has arrived, and the result is more than just music.

The duo came together in a little promo for Kurupt’s MoonRock, a corporate brand of marijuana sold at dispensaries in California. “When lightening strikes, you know it!” Snoop shouts in the video, gesturing to the jar of the pebbly crystal bits in his hand. The same line, clearly sung by Pharrell, plays in the background – it appears to be the chorus of their new jam (called “Lightening Strikes”). Snoop shuts it off before we can hear the whole thing. “That’s enough of that music, I can’t let you hear all [of it]… Your ass [already] got a verse and a half.”

The verse and a half we got is very Doggish, bud-loving included. “I get my groove on, I do my thing. My planet’s Krypton, home of the freaks. Come get yo moon rocks. I am a G.” Right after, we get Pharrell’s unmistakable chromatic climb into a high harmonic progression. The duet is seamless, a welcome follow up to the pair’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” in 2004 and “Beautiful” in 2005.

Kurupt, Snoop’s pal and member of Tha Dogg Pound, is the proprietor of the cannabis confections (and apparently he also goes by Dr. MoonRock, as Snoop later refers to him in a sort of sequel video).  The treat’s title and tagline is “Kurupt’s Moon Rock – Strongest Bud in Your Galaxy!” While images of Snoop pop up on the website, the video itself does not (as it’s more of a candid cut). The official 30-second promo shows a close-up of a cannabis granule as it becomes coated in bubbly hash oil and dusted with kief. Snoop’s beckon to “Come get yo moon rocks,” combined with this visual, is already bringing a burst of attention to the product.

The Doggfather’s next album is a much-anticipated project expected (at least by fans) to arrive 2015. Pharrell has been talking about it since earlier this summer. “It’s Snoop Dogg. You’re gonna bug out from the approach of what we did. We’re almost done… But dude. Snoop’s album is better than mine.”
