Sam Smith Makes History on the UK Albums Chart

Sam Smith has the Number 1 album on the UK Albums Chart, again. This is the first chart in the United Kingdom to incorporate streaming data, digital downloads, and physical sales. In The Lonely Hour managed to accumulate 41,000 sales, 2,900 of those sales were streams, and it is the first album to reach the top of the UK charts under its new system. To date, In The Lonely Hour has sold over three million copies, making it the best-selling project of 2015. The project also won Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at this year’s Grammy Awards, after charting at Number 1 in the UK, Sweden, South Africa, Scotland, New Zealand, and Ireland.

Smith just performed at the Brit Awards last week, and he walked away with two awards; the British Breakthrough Act and The Global Success honor. It seems Ed Sheeran also benefited from his performance at the Brit Awards, and his X album climbed up one spot to the Number  2 position on the UK Albums Chart. Sheeran’s album accumulated 38,000 sales, with 3,400 streams. The rock singer won British Male Solo Artist, and British Album of the Year at the Brit Awards. Sheeran’s X album has generated more than 430 million streams on Spotify, and it was certified platinum in the US. The project’s single “Thinking Out Loud” reached the top of the UK Singles chart, and it reached Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Sam Smith recently added nineteen North America dates for his forthcoming tour. He will travel to Belgium on March 1st to begin his tour, which will wrap its overseas leg in Norway on June 11th. Smith will embark on the US leg of the tour on July 17th at the Forecastle Festival in Louisville. The pop singer will also travel to Miami (FL), Tampa (FL), Raleigh (NC), San Diego (CA), and Austin (TX), before the tour wraps in Grand Prairie (TX) on August 17th.

Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran started his X Tour last month. He will remain overseas and travel to Asia, South America, and Oceania until April 30th. Sheeran‘s North America leg of the tour will began in New Orleans on May 2nd, and it will conclude in Milwaukee on July 3rd. The rock singer will also travel to New York, California, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nevada, Utah, and more.
