Sam Smith Cancels Festival for Surgery

Canceling plans is the last thing we want someone to do to us. If your excited, the last thing you would want to do is be the one to cancel. Unfortunately, some things just happen unexpectedly and the plans or rather the festival must go on, and that is exactly what the Hangout Music Festival must do now that one of their best performers, Sam Smith, is no longer able to play the show.

Not only has he had to drop out of the festival, Smith has also had to cancel all of his upcoming concerts, which is devastating for any true, dedicated musician. Smith announced these cancellations via facebook, informing fans that he requires surgery due to his vocal cord problems: “I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last 10 days, but unfortunately they haven’t recovered and I am going to need surgery,” he posts. He is truly disappointed that he won’t be able to play, but his doctor claims that he will be back in 6-8 weeks.

Currently there is no certainty of whether the festival will replace Smith or change the schedule. This is not the first that festival has had a cancellation so close to the day of the festival. This year will make the sixth year of the music festival and it is expected to have more than 40,000 people attend at the public beach in Gulf Shores, Ala. With so many people expected to be there, they will just have to deal with a cancellation like they have before.

In 2010, the Flaming Lips had to cancel because one their band members were injured right before the show. However, they were quickly replaced by The Roots. In 2011, Cee Lo Green missed his time slot to perform because of travel delays; luckily, they convinced the Foo Fighters to make a surprise appearance in place of Green. In 2014, Chance the Rapper canceled after the show already started, so the band scheduled to play before him took on an extra set of songs. Plans never go accordingly, so the festival will just have to deal with Sam Smith’s cancellation like they have been since their inception. More info on Smith’s recovery and the schedule for the Hangout Music Festival is still to come.
