Russian Musicians try to Gain American Audience

Russian musicians Boris Grim and Bratya Grim have changed their music style and genre, in an effort to reach the American audience. After seventeen years of creating music in their Russian language, the band is creating music in English for the first time. The band members consisting of frontman Boris Burdaev, bass player Maksim Nikitin, drummer Vasily Nikitin, and guitarist Vladimir Kosorukov, recently released “The Other Half of My Soul” and “Dead Season.” “The Other Half of My Soul,” was the band’s first single release in the United States. While the song didn’t receive rave reviews, it was called a “solid attempt” to break into mainstream music.

On the other hand, Boris Grim and Bratya Grim’s “Dead Season” was praised for its vocals, lyrics, and delivery. One music critic said the song is reminiscent of 1990s rock music. “Dead Season” seems to be a better representation of what American audiences can expect from Boris Grim and Bratya Grim. A few days ago, the band premiered the music video for “Dead Season,” and it can be viewed right here on FDRMX.

Boris Grim and Bratya Grim aren’t the first Russian artists to crossover into English speaking countries. Timati, T.A.T.U., and Alsou are all Russian artists who have gained success in America, and other countries abroad. Timati is a Russian rapper and producer, who has worked with some of today’s biggest mainstream recording artists. Some of the musicians he has worked with include Flo Rida, P. Diddy, Timbaland, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Xzibit, Eve, and more. Timati has dropped four studio albums, Black Star, The Boss, SWAGG, and 13. The rapper’s SWAGG project entered the charts in Russia, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, and it featured the singles “Groove On,” “I’m On You,” and “Money in Da Bank.”

The pop duo T.A.T.U. had a very successful music career, before they split in 2011. “All the Things She Said” was considered to be one of the greatest singles in the 2000s. The song sold over four million copies worldwide, and it reached Number 1 in Australia, Austria, Europe, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, and several other countries. The duo’s “Not Gonna Get Us” and “All About Us” also peaked at Number 1 on the music charts. “Not Gonna Get Us” also topped the US Hot Dance Club Play chart in 2003. Russian singer Alsou put out a number of English songs, including “You’re My #1” featuring Enrique Iglesias and “Before You Love Me.” “Before You Love Me” reached Number 27 on the UK Singles chart in 2001.
