Rapper Mykki Blanco Reveals He is HIV Positive

Mykki Blanco revealed to his fans on social media that is he HIV positive. “I’ve been HIV Positive since 2011, my entire career. F**k stigma and hiding in the dark, this is my real life. I’m healthy, I’ve toured the world 13 times but I’ve been living in the dark. It’s time to actually be as punk as I say I am,” Blanco wrote on Facebook. His announcement comes as Pride weekend begins in Pittsburgh (PA), Los Angeles (CA), and Brooklyn (NY). “Mykki Blanco no more living a lie. HAPPY PRIDE…being afraid of stigma is exhausting. The music industry ain’t gonna like I admitted this so if a curator could help me move more into the art world, that would be awesome,” he wrote.

Nick Jonas is headlining Pittsburgh Pride, which celebrates those individuals in the LGBTIQA community. The pop singer is replacing Iggy Azalea, who was originally scheduled to headline the event. Due to controversy surrounding her appearance, Azalea decided to remove herself from the event. Several years ago, Azalea sent out numerous homophobic and racist tweets. Some people in the LGBT community did not believe Azalea is a positive representation of Pride. The Australian rapper released a statement apologizing for her past statements, and she denied she was neither homophobic nor racist.

Blanco has had to deal with countless discriminating situations, due to the fact that he is an openly gay man. In 2014, the rapper claimed he was arrested in Portugal for being homosexual. “I’m being arrested in Portugal for being gay,” he wrote on social media. During his time in jail, Blanco posted photos from inside his cell. The rapper was eventually released, and he was given a fine.
