Raekwon, Ghostface Reviewing Mixtapes for a Fee

Raekwon and Ghostface Killah premiered the trailer for The Purple Tape Files documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in January. The documentary centers around the creation of Raekwon’s first solo project, Only Built 4 Cuban Link. When Raekwon and Killah debuted the trailer earlier this year, Raekwon also revealed the documentary would be funded by a fan-supported website called FanBacked. The company is a crowd-funding system similar to Kickstarter, for which fans can donate money to help fund projects. Unlike Kickstarter, FanBacked only funds projects for artists, producers, and talent in the music industry.

Raekwon and Killah’s FanBacked page offers different rewards for fans who donate money. The reward is dependent on how much is donated. For instance, a $5 dollar donation will be rewarded with a 20th anniversary Purple Tape Sticker Pack. Higher donations will receive merchandise packages that include T-shirts, hats, key chains, DVD/BluRay collector editions, signed posters, and other merchandise. Perhaps the most influential rewards is the one where fans can submit their mixtape in order for it to be reviewed by Raekwon for $200 dollars.

Another big reward requires a $500 donation, which will get the fan’s name in the documentary credits. The rappers are offering two $1000 reward options, too. For $1000, a fan will receive an All-Access pass to Raekwon’s shows for five years. The other $1000 reward is an exclusive invite to the Private Launch Party for The Purple Tape Files. Fans who donate $2500, $3500, $4000, $5000, and $10,000 will be rewarded the biggest gifts of all. Those rewards include a visit to the film set, studio time with Raekwon, access to attend the movie premiere, a chance to spend the day with Raekwon, and an associate producer film credit. The $10,000 donation will get the fan’s name on the film credits as a producer of The Purple Tape Files

Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Link was released in 1995. The project featured all of the members of Wu-Tang Clan, except for Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Only Built 4 Cuban Link was strategically composed like a film, and Raekwon was the lead actor, Ghostface Killah was the supporting actor, and RZA was the director. The album entered at Number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart, and sold 130,000 copies in its debut week. To date, Only Built 4 Cuban Linkhas sold over one million copies in the US.
