Princeton Students Not in Favor of Big Sean

Some students at Princeton University (New Jersey) have started a petition to have Big Sean dropped as their Lawnparties event headliner. The petition was started by two Princeton students, Duncan Hosie and Rebecca Basaldua, who believe the rapper’s music promotes rape culture, and they called his lyrics misogynistic. Hosie said he was appalled by a video that featured Sean’s “I Don’t F*** with You” song, for which the rapper repeatedly states “stupid ass bitch.” “After I saw that video, I started researching Big Sean’s language and I found language that was both misogynistic and homophobic,” Hosie stated.

He reached out to Basaldua about his displeasure with Sean‘s music, and she agreed that he should not be able to perform at Princeton University. “We wrote an op-ed piece that we published on Google Docs yesterday and wanted to see the number of supporters. Right now, close to 500 people have signed,” Hosie said. The petition states that the Undergraduate Student Government (USG), who is responsible for bringing Sean to the university, should not be promoting rape culture and misogyny. “In the future, USG should strive to bring non-misogynistic acts to campus,” the petition reads.

No matter how many students sign the petition, the contracts to bring the rapper to Princeton have already been signed. “The contracts are signed and it’s unrealistic to stop this from happening,” Simon Wu (USG’s social committee chairman) told The Daily Princetonian. Wu did state that the petition could help the school’s artist selection process in the future. Even though the petition will not keep Big Sean from performing at Princeton, some students have begun hanging up posters in an effort to protest his appearance on campus.

Big Sean’s Dark Sky Paradise topped the Billboard 200 album chart last month, becoming the rapper’s fist Number 1 album on the chart. The project sold over 170,000 in its debut week, which beat out Kid Rock’s First Kiss album. Dark Sky Paradise is Sean’s third studio album, and it features the singles “I Don’t F*** with You” featuring E-40, “Paradise,” and “Blessings” featuring Drake and Kanye West. “I Don’t F*** with You” reached Number 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot Rap Songs, and Rhythmic charts. It also has been certified platinum, after selling more than one million digital copies.
