Pitchfork Music Festival Kicks Off an Incredible Lineup

For the ninth time in as many years, The 2014 Pitchfork Music Festival will feature acts from established musicians as well as up and coming performers. Today’s lineup starts with experimental trip hop band and FDRMX featured artist Hundred Waters. They’ll be the appetizer for an entire day of live performances from Giorgio Moroder, SZA, The Haxan Cloak, and many others before the day closes out with a little known solo artist named Beck.
The rest of the weekend is jam packed with wonderful artists such as St. Vincent, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Festival closer Kendrick Lamar. These artists will perform throughout the weekend off of three color coded stages (labeled red, blue, and green). The Sunday and Saturday shows have completely sold out, so Chicago’s relatively small Union Park will be very crowded all weekend. Fortunately, beautiful weather is forecasted for all three days of the festival, so the 55,000 plus people in attendance will at least be spared any thunder or rain.
Pitchfork has often been considered Chicago’s warm up festival for the juggernaut that is Lollapalooza, scheduled for August 1st. While Pitchfork definitely lacks the name recognition of its older brother, the acquisitions of such big name artists like Beck and Kendrick Lamar are pretty impressive for the less than a decade old festival. While it may be a few years until Pitchfork can grow out of Lollapalooza’s enormous shadow, the organizers behind the event have done a terrific job of giving the festival its own distinct identity.
More details of Pitchfork can be seen at their main website. The complete list of performances is listed below along with Hundred Waters’s stop-motion music video for “Thistle.” Give it a watch!
