It’s hilarious how so many people have such a big opinion in regards to Idina Menzel‘s performance on New Year’s Eve. I agree Menzel was a little off-key when she belted out the high notes of “Let It Go,” but other than that, her performance was on point. Let’s be fair, Idina was performing live in freezing cold temperatures. For those who do not know, singing in cold weather is very difficult. As a matter of fact, most artists don’t perform in cold weather; they usually lip sync to a pre-recorded track. Considering what happened to Idina, I can understand why.
I definitely applaud her for singing live, and I have even more respect for the fact that she tried to hit those high notes. Idina commented on all the recent criticism on social media and other news outlets, “there are about 3 million notes in a two-and-a-half hour musical; being a perfectionist, it took me a long time to realize that if I hit seventy-five percent of them, I’m succeeding.” She is exactly right, I’m sure all artists want to do perfect performances, but that is not realistic. For a powerhouse vocalist like Idina, performing without being off-key presents an even bigger obstacle. Idina also said that performing isn’t only about the ‘acrobatics’ and the high notes. She also added that performing live is about staying in the moment and connecting with the audience.
I can name far worse live performances than Idina’s on Wednesday night. I won’t put any artists on blast, but I’m sure you know who you are. There are a lot of artists who are notorious for performing badly. That’s probably what I find so amusing; some of you guys are acting as if we are used to seeing stellar live performances all the time. In reality, the majority of live performances are average or below average at best.
Vocalists like Adele have definitely spoiled us. I must say, I haven’t heard a less than perfect performance from Adele, yet. I probably shouldn’t have mentioned Adele, and contrary to belief, I didn’t mention her name in order to be funny. If you have no idea why mentioning Adele is funny, research the name “Adele Dazeem.” Thank you, John Travolta.
