We already brought you parts one and two of our list of 31 things you didn’t know about Orange Is The New Black, and now we’re back with part three! Check out the final 10 fascinating facts about the Netflix original show that you definitely (probably) did not know. You might be surprised by what you learn!
Number Ten: There Is Demographic Significance to Chang’s Character. In the book on which OITNB is based, Kerman says that there was “one tiny Chinese woman in her sixties.” Clearly, this character was realized as Chang.
Number Nine: Chang Has Pink Hair. It’s true! In real life, Lori Tann Chin, who plays Chang, has pink hair.
Number Eight: Taystee’s Makeshift Cigarette Lighter Works. The lighter that Taystee makes with a battery would legitimately start a fire if you were to make it.
Number Seven: Danielle Brooks and Uzo Aduba Are BFF IRL. In fact, they even sing together! Seriously, this is an OITNB dream come true.
Number Six: Norma Was in a Band. The character of Norma might be mute in the show, but the woman who plays her, Annie Gordon, is anything but. Gordon used to be in a band called The Shirts.
Number Five: Danielle Brooks Didn’t Meet Her Mini-Me Until After the Show. You may have been amazed to see the uncanny resemblance between the adult actors and their child counterparts in the show, but you might be even more surprised to learn that Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee, didn’t meet her child counterpart until after she filmed all of her scenes! The two could be sisters.
Number Four: Brooks Isn’t Actually Good at Math. Though Taystee is a bit of a math whiz in the show, Brooks isn’t good at math in real life.
Number Three: And She Never Read Harry Potter. In the show, Taystee is known for her love of Harry Potter. In real life, Brooks hasn’t read a single Harry Potter book.
Number Two: Black Cindy Keeps a Picture of Denzel Washington. Some of the character’s possessions are more strange than others, but the character of Black Cindy (played by Adrienne C. Moore) might take the cake with the picture of Denzel Washington she keeps with her in the show.
Number One: Jenji Kohan Wrote an Episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. OITNB was created by Jenji Kohan, who you might also know as the creator of Weeds. However, Kohan wrote an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1994 as well! We hope you enjoyed our list of 31 things you didn’t know about OITNB!
