Today, the nominees were announced for the 2014 American Music Awards. The winners, which are decided through fan votes, will be announced during ABC’s live broadcast at 8pm EST on November 23rd. Charli XCX will perform at the event, which will be held in the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
Iggy Azalea is leading the pack with 6 nominations, while John Legend, Katy Perry, and Pharrell Williams follow close behind with 5 each. Other artists who received multiple honors include Lorde with 4 nominations, Beyoncé, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, OneRepublic, and One Direction with 3 nominations, and Bastille, Drake, Luke Bryan, and Sam Smith with two nominations.
The main categories are Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year (Presented by Kohl’s), Single of the Year, and Top Soundtrack. The other categories are broken down into various genres. For Pop/Rock, fans will select a Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Band, Duo or Group, and Favorite Album. The same categories are featured for the Country genre. Rap/Hip-Hop artists will fight for just two slots, Favorite Artist and Favorite Album, while Soul/R&B artists will fall into three: Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Female Artist, and Favorite Album. Interestingly, Favorite Artist is the only category for the genres of Alternative Rock, Adult Contemporary, Latin, Contemporary Inspirational, and Electronic Dance Music.
The nominees for Artist of the Year are Iggy Azalea, Beyoncé, Luke Bryan, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, John Legend, Lorde, One Direction, Katy Perry, and Pharrell Williams. New Artist of the Year (Presented by Kohl’s) is up for grabs for 5 Seconds of Summer, Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Sam Smith, and Meghan Trainor. The Single of the Year will be awarded to one of the following: Iggy Azalea for “Fancy (Feat. Charli XCX),” John Legend for “All of Me,” MAGIC! for “Rude,” Katy Perry for “Dark Horse (Feat. Juicy J),” and Pharrell Williams for “Happy.”
The nominees for Favorite Male Artist in Pop/Rock are John Legend, Sam Smith, and Pharrell Williams. For Favorite Female Artist in Pop/Rock, Iggy Azalea, Lorde, and Katy Perry will duke it out.
