This year’s Billboard Music Awards was good to Australian rapper, songwriter, and model, Iggy Azalea, who took home three out of the twelve awards she was nominated for. That is, as long Azalea’s naysayers don’t have their way. According to a petition that popped up on Change.org, it was Nicki Minaj, who deserved the award for Top Rap Song and not Azalea. To back their claims that Azalea not only did not deserve the award but was also not eligible to even be nominated for Top Rap Song, the petition’s creator states that “the eligibility time period for nominations is March 10th, 2014 through March 2015. ’Fancy’ was released on February 17th, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility starting…Billboard did not follow their own guidelines and should have to recalculate these nominations without “Fancy” as a nominee.” The petition also goes on to name Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda as the likely winner, “this is unfair to the other nominees in these category, especially to “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj, who most likely would’ve won.” Unfortunately for those in favor of revoking Azalea’s award, a spokeswoman for Dick Clark Productions, the production company for Billboard Music Awards, has stated that “It was eligible.” She also clarified that instead of using release dates as a guideline, the award show uses a “reporting period” which is based off of Nielsen sales data and chart performance.
The petition, which was started a week ago, has already received twenty thousand signatures and plenty of comments as to why they are supporting. While some of the users comments explain why they feel it is necessary that Azalea have the award taken away, “because there are rules than need to be followed, and this kind of injustice is too much. Nicki Minaj woud’ve won if this didn’t happen,” and “Aside from the release date being outside of the relevant award season, we should not be rewarding transphobia, racism, or plagiarism,” others use the petition as a sounding board for their hate of Azalea. One commenter wrote, “NICKI SLAYS and egghead lasagne does not.” Another user commented that, “Iggy has soiled the name of rap music. No one deserves this award less than her. A dead goldfish has more talent in one fin than she does in her entire body. Nicki is a goddess and she should get this award! Down with Iggy omg.” So far neither Azalea nor Minaj have addressed the controversy.
