The Wanted pop group are currently on a music hiatus, and so The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes is embarking on a solo career. Sykes is working on his first solo album, which the singer describes as soulful pop. The pop singer said he didn’t want to wait for the band to get back together, and he decided to use this opportunity to showcase his writing talents to the world. “I’m far too young to put my music career on hold. I feel like I have a lot to give and I feel like I have a lot of music to write and a lot to prove as well,” Sykes told MTV News.
The pop singer also wants people to know that he is more than just a member of The Wanted. Sykes said his debut album will represent who he is personally and musically. Although Diane Warren and Babyface will contribute to his album as well, the pop singer said he is writing a lot of songs from his personal love experiences. “There’s a few different people that I write about. There’s a couple of breakups that I write about and a few almost romances and what not,” Sykes told MTV. He continued, “There are a couple songs that talk about being in relationships as well, so it’s going to be quite funny when people start to listen to the lyrics.”
The pop singer did reveal that one of the songs from his upcoming album is about his past relationship with Ariana Grande, but Sykes said don’t expect the song to be bitter. The two pop stars dated in 2013, and the pop singer said he took positive experiences from the relationship. “I’m one of those really annoying people for exes. I don’t hold grudges whatsoever. And I am one of those people who only takes really positive experiences from relationships and moves forward with it,” Sykes said to MTV News. He added, “It’s a really nice song even though it is quite heartbreaking. It’s got a really nice message with it.”
The pop singer said the song’s main message is about not being angry about past relationships, and he believes the best thing to do is just move on. Sykes also said he is really happy for Ariana Grande because she is doing things she’s always dreamed of, like being nominated for a Grammy as well as performing at the awards show. Sykes’ first single is expected to drop in the spring. As of right now, there is not a timetable for when The Wanted will return to doing music. The band has released three studio albums including The Wanted, Battleground, and Word of Mouth, but they haven’t released a project since 2013. No other group members have decided to go solo, but The Wanted’s Max George is pursuing an acting career.
