Tidal seems to have created the biggest wave in the music industry since its launch last month, but Mumford and Sons aren’t amused by the music streaming company. “We wouldn’t have joined it anyway, even if they had asked. We don’t want to be tribal,” frontman Marcus Mumford told The Daily Beast. Mumford believes Tidal will only be beneficial to mainstream artists, not small indie bands like Mumford and Sons. “I think smaller bands should get paid more for it. Bigger bands have other ways of making money, and so I don’t think you can complain. When they say it’s artist-owned, it’s owned by those rich, wealthy artists,” Mumford stated.
The band will not not put their music on any of the other music streaming companies like Spotify or Beats Music either. “We want people to listen to our music in their most comfortable way, and if they are not up for paying for it, I don’t really care,” the lead singer exclaimed. Mumford stated that smaller bands have a better opportunity to succeed in today’s music industry, than they have in the past. “[Today] you don’t need to have a record deal to have your music listened to worldwide,” Mumford said.
Guitarist Winston Marshall added that the band’s reasoning for not joining Tidal is not intended to make an anti-streaming statement. “We don’t want to be a part of some Tidal streaming revolution, nor do we want to be Taylor Swift and be anti-it. I don’t understand her argument either, [streaming] is how people are going to listen to music now,” Marshall stated. He continued, “So diversity as a band. It doesn’t mean selling your songs to adverts. We look at our albums as standalone pieces of art, and also as adverts for our live shows.”
Mumford and Sons’ new album Wilder Mind will be dropped on May 4th. Two songs have been released from the project including “Believe” and “The Wolf.” This summer, the band will embark on their summer tour. Mumford and Sons will make several stops at music festivals including Bonnaroo Music Festival on June 11th. The band will also travel overseas for shows in the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany.
