Morrissey has added the BRIT Awards and Madonna to his list of current targets. The pop singer released a 1300-word essay, in which he criticized the BBC, Taylor Swift, the BRIT Award‘s hosts, and others. “At its most honest, the BRIT Awards are unfairly given to singers who, it is hoped, might be encouraged enough by the award to actually write a good song,” the singer wrote. Morrissey said the BRIT Awards give young singers awards they have not earned, and none of the artists ask themselves if they are deserving of the honor. “Just as the Mercury Prize lands like a voodoo doll in the hands of the unlucky recipient (who is usually to be found selling mattresses ten months later), a Brit Award generally goes to a lot of shriveled young souls who have not earned it, yet none are likely to ask ‘are you sure I deserve it,'” Morrissey said.
In his essay, the pop singer refers to Madonna as “MacDonna.” Morrissey wrote that Madonna had a quiet 2014, but she is now promoting her “frightening career” at the BRIT Awards. Madonna will perform at this year’s awards show on February 25th for the first time in twenty years. “The Brits launch party highlighted a song that reached no higher than Number 62 on the UK chart,” he wrote referring to Madonna’s song on the music charts. Morrissey feels the awards show is abandoning their heritage in order to serve modern music. “In the guise of serving the public, the Brit Awards have hi-jacked modern music in order to kill off the heritage that produced so many interesting people,” the pop singer wrote. He adds, “The maximum trimmings divert your attention from the fact that Taylor Swift has nothing to do with Coventry or Wrexham.”
Morrissey has never been a stranger to rants or controversy. Just recently, he refused to perform a show in Iceland because the venue served meat. The pop singer is a well-known advocate of animal rights. Morrissey referred to the Iceland venue promoters as “cannibalistic flesh-eating bloodlust.” The pop artist also went on a tirade against his former record label, Harvest Records. While performing at a few concerts, Morrissey and his band members wore t-shirts with the words “F*** Harvest.”
