Missy Elliott just revealed she is working in the recording studio with Pharrell Williams. It can be assumed the two Virginia natives are working on Elliott’s new project. “VA! 2 up 2 down! Me & my fam @Pharrell hard at work,” the rapper tweeted. The tweet was also accompanied with a photo of Elliott and Williams. Earlier this month, the rapper also announced she is collaborating with longtime producing partner, Timbaland. The production duo worked on a number of projects, most notably Aaliyah‘s diamond-certified album, One in a Million.
While Pharrell Williams may be enjoying his time in the recording studio with Elliott, the producer is currently in a court battle against Marvin Gaye‘s family. The Gaye estate claims Robin Thicke and Williams’ “Blurred Lines” is just a carbon copy of Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up.” The trial began in Los Angeles a couple of days ago, and it is expected to last a little over a week. There have been several claims made by the Gaye family to support why they feel Thicke stole Gaye’s 1977 hit song. The family believes the R&B singer is obsessed with Marvin Gaye’s music. They contend Robin Thicke’s “Love After War” was also stolen from Gaye’s “After the Dance” record. “Blurred Lines” is accused of having the same vocal melodies, chorus, bass melody, keyboard, and percussion elements of “Got to Give It Up.”
The Gaye estate estimated that “Blurred Lines” has made Thicke and Williams over forty million dollars, although Williams and Thicke denied the song has profited that much revenue. They also suggest the money they did receive from the success of “Blurred Lines” is not solely based on the music. Both recording artists believe the song was so successful because of its sexy music video and social media promotions. Gaye’s estate also claims that Thicke has often publicly stated he was inspired by Marvin Gaye. Although Thicke’s attorney argued that claim does not prove Thicke stole any of Gaye’s music, it just simply means Thicke is a fan of the legendary R&B singer. The eight-day trial will include testimony from Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, Thicke’s ex-wife Paula Patton, and T.I., who is also featured on “Blurred Lines.”
