A trailer for the upcoming comedy The Night Before just hit the Internet, and it’s chock full of celebrity appearances. However, Miley Cyrus’ return to the big screen is one of the most surprising.
Seth Rogen took to his social media to share the trailer, stating it “was made by Jews, is about Christmas, and opens on Thanksgiving.” The flick stars “three ride or die homies,” according to the trailer’s voiceover, portrayed by Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie and is slated as being from the guys who brought us comedies like This Is The End, Neighbors “and almost The Interview.”

The plot focuses on the trio’s apparent last Christmas together, sending them through numerous adventures with the goal of crossing off traditions from their list. Mindy Kaling and Lizzy Caplan make an appearance, inspiring the Cyrus plot line as Kaling tells the guys about Caplan’s awesome karaoke performance of “Wrecking Ball.” Kaling then explains “you can cry to it, you can run to it, you can party to it.” This leads to a short peak at Gordon-Levitt belting it out with Cyrus, the latter of whom appears to have chosen tree ornaments and pine cones as hair adornments.
“Wrecking Ball” gained a controversial rise to popularity with Cyrus swinging on a wrecking ball in her birthday suit for its video, garnering 768 million views and counting. The clip has been mimicked by Anne Hathaway for the LL Cool J-hosted Spike TV show Lip Sync Battle, and the track has been covered by everyone from Haim to Rebecca Black. None of this is surprising given the song has multiplatinum RIAA certification having sold more than 3.6 million units since its August 2013 release.
It’s no secret that Miley Cyrus got her big break as the title character on Hannah Montana, which aired on Disney from 2006 to 2011, but the singer has laid low when it comes to acting gigs as of late. She had a Hannah Montana movie in 2009 followed by Nicholas Sparks’ The Last Song in 2010 and LOL with Demi Moore as her mother and a private eye-inspired So Undercover in 2012.
Outside of her The Night Before appearance, which hits theaters November 25, Cyrus can also be seen hosting the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards. She announced the news via her Instagram with an image of her in an alien costume, sporting signs that say “MTV won’t let me perform, so I’m hosting this year’s VMAs,” which obviously draws reference to her twerking controversy with Robin Thicke two years ago. The 2015 VMAs will broadcast on MTV August 30 at 9 p.m.
