Mike Posner is currently working on his sophomore album, which he said is almost complete. The singer-songwriter completed his debut album, 31 Minutes to Takeoff and then began working on Sky High and Pages, which were never released. Posner has a new record label home, Island Records, and he’s ready to deliver his new sound to the world. “I was what they call shelved, which meant if I didn’t have a big song on the radio my album wasn’t going to be released. I don’t feel bitter about that at all,” Posner told Billboard magazine. He continued, ” I asked RCA to let me off the label and they very graciously did, and after that I sort of stumbled on this new material and this new style. I could probably put out Sky High and Pages, but that music is no longer current to me.”
The singer-songwriter recently previewed some of his new material at South By Southwest (SXSW) including “Craving Me,” “Took a Pill in Ibiza,” and “Buried in Detroit.” “In my heart I knew the songs were among the best I’d written, but when they came out I was like, ‘What the hell do I do with this,'” Posner revealed to Billboard. Once he realized that his hesitation was just fear, he had a revelation. “I realized I was just being scared, so I was like, ‘If you’re gonna do it just do it. You have to adjust to the material, not the other way around.'”
Posner went on the road with country singer Jake Owen, and the singer said he was influenced by Owen. “I rode the bus with him, and at night he and his tour manager would take me to country school. I learned about Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Jr. and Hank Williams Sr.,” he told the magazine. Posner stated his fans will hear how he was influenced by country music on his new album.
The upcoming project doesn’t have a release date, but the album does have a title (Posner refused to reveal the album title). While he puts the finishing touches on his album, Posner is working with Maroon 5‘s guitarist, James Valentine. Posner told Billboard that Maroon 5’s “Sugar” was a song he originally wrote for his Pages project, but Adam Levine heard it, and asked for it. Obviously, the songwriter obliged to Levine’s request. Besides Maroon 5, Posner’s songwriting credits include Nick Jonas, Justin Bieber, and Big Sean.
