Michael Giacchino has more than a few soundtracks under his belt. With an Oscar win for the poignant score of Up (2010), Giacchino is no stranger to creating vast, dynamic worlds through music—something viewers of Up, Ratatouille, Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness, Jupiter Ascending, and Tomorrowland (just to name a few of his many projects) will know. However, it is his newest project that has many listeners raving and practically foaming at the mouth.
On June 12, 2015, to the delight of both old audiences and new, Jurassic World will hit theaters. The young—both in age and at heart—will flood the theaters to see the prehistoric theme park come alive for what may be the last time. Big names like Chris Pratt (Parks and Rec, Guardians of the Galaxy), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), and Ty Simpkins (Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 2, Iron Man 3) will be gracing the silver screen with their talent. The talent, however, extends far past the acting abilities, as Giacchino, who scored two of the Jurassic Park tie-in video games, has scored the newest Jurassic film, the soundtrack for which is now available through iTunes.
When glancing through the track titles, you’re first caught by the pun-filled, clever titles—such as “Indominus Wrecks” and “The Dimorphodon Shuffle”—but then, within the first few seconds of each track, you’re pulled in, Giacchino’s score drawing you under and into the world of the film.
With both clever title and interesting composition, “Love in the Time of Pterosauria,” is my favorite both in name and sound, as it is one of the most chilling tracks of the album. The strings race and the trumpets ring, and you can practically hear your blood rushing through your ears as you prepare for the imminent danger promised by the composition.
In addition to other thrilling tracks, such as “Our Rex Is Bigger Than Yours” and softer, spookier tracks like the haunting “Clearly His First Rodeo,” the third track has listeners pause. “Welcome to Jurassic World,” brings tears to the eyes and a bittersweet nostalgia to the heart of those who immediately recognize the arrangement from the previous Jurassic films. With twenty-four tracks, Jurassic World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) offers listeners an appealing, immersive experience into Jurassic World.
