Michael Bolton Dedicates a Love Song to the IRS

In honor of the frequently dreaded tax season, musician Michael Bolton has written a new love song dedicated to the IRS. Describing the process of filing taxes as “painful but ultimately rewarding,” Bolton debuted his charming new cut on an April 12th appearance on John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight. The track was included in a segment dedicated to the corporation, and displays a grudging respect for the IRS from the Grammy Award-winning musician who claims “we need the IRS to stay alive.”

Show host John Oliver appeared in the segment, explaining the need for some recognition for the IRS. “I think they may deserve at least a few minutes of at least grudging acknowledgment of the unpleasant but necessary function they serve,” before going on to introduce Bolton and his single. Oliver went on to describe the new ballad as “if not a love song, a song of reluctant support for their appropriate funding.” Supported by percussion, strings, and piano, Bolton took the stage in a suit to sing his ballad. With lyrics such as “though we need you really bad / its clear nobody like you / you’re the anus of our country /don’t you know,” Bolton claimed that the IRS was necessary but unpopular with the general public.

Michael Bolton is currently working on recording a new studio album, his first album of original material since 2011’s Gems: The Duets Collection. He has revealed that he is hitting the studio with A. R. Rahman, a prolific Indian musician whom he famously collaborated with on Gems. In 2013, the musician released a tribute album, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – A Tribute to Hitsville USA, working with Kelly Rowland amongst other musicians on the album. Bolton has also appeared in several Honda commercials between 2013 and 2014, singing in the commercials.

Since the release of his first album, Michael Bolotin, in 1975 Bolton has gone on to sell more than 75 million records. He has topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts nine times over his career and has released more than 15 albums including several Christmas compilations. Bolton has also acted both in feature length films and television productions. In 2010, he made an appearance on Dancing with the Stars. He also is apparently an avid tax payer.
