Meiko – Be Mine

Meiko’s video for “Be Mine,” is surprising for several reasons. We are thrust into an exciting night in the city with the rushing highways and sparkling skylines in the opening shots. But rather than a luxury nightclub or rooftop bar, we first meet Meiko on a darkened street corner. She sings straight into the camera and marches forward in a beat-up leather jacket, Cleopatra-esque necklace, and white dress. For a song that is so very pop, this video is very unexpected. There are no scantily-clad backup dancers, and “Be Mine” is devoid of all pink. Rather than partying half to death, the lead singer is shown by herself, scribbling in a notebook as she sits in bars and chills on bridges. This almost makes it feel like she is writing the song right as it is happening, or working on her next one. As she strolls straight through throngs of slow-dancing couples, the independent feel of the music video is an exciting twist – especially for a song title pulled straight out of Valentine’s Day candy.
