Founder of Depeche Mode, Martin Gore, is releasing a solo project entitled MG. The album will feature sixteen electronic instrumentals, and it will be released on April 28th on Mute. Gore has penned a great number of Depeche Mode’s songs, and he has been considering doing an instrumental project for years. “I wanted to keep the music very electronic, very filmic and give it an almost sci-fi like quality,” Gore toldRolling Stone magazine earlier this month. He continued,”Music is a necessity for me. I go into the studio at least five days a week, every week. Once I had the idea and the template, the process was quick and fun.”
The title for the project, MG, stems from VCMG, which is his electronic collaboration with Vince Clark (also a member of Depeche Mode). The duo dropped three projects, one (Ssss) of which was released three years ago. “As a songwriter I am aware of the power of words. Especially when they are juxtaposed in the right way with chords and melody,” Gore stated to Rolling Stone. He added,”I am also aware of the power of pure music and the emotions that can be created by musical atmospheres and that is what I wanted to capture with this project.”
Gore just premiered the music video for “Europa Hymn,” which is the lead single for his upcoming MG album. Martin Gore’s most recognized penned hits for Depeche Mode include “Never Let Me Down,” “Shake the Disease,” “Everything Counts,” “People are People,” “I Feel You,” “Enjoy the Silence,” and “Personal Jesus.” His debut solo album Counterfeit was released twelve years ago, and it impacted the charts in Denmark, France, and the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. The project peaked at Number 3 on the US Dance/Electronic Album Charts.
The two singles from the project also reached the music charts. “Stardust” peaked at Number 16 on the singles chart in Denmark, and it also reached the charts in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. The other single “Loverman” charted at Number 53 on the charts in Germany. In 1999, Gore was recognized for his songwriting by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors, and he received the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement.
