Let’s face it, everyone has a top-five list—maybe even more—of songs that when you think about it or hear it, the first word that comes to mind is torture. Whether it is a song that is so sad that you cry, but still listen to it anyway or a song that is just so sickening because you’ve heard it so many times, we all have a song that gets under our skin. You may hate the song, find it annoying or just can’t get it out of you—that one song that just makes you cringe. If you’re nice you’ll just think about the songs that you think is torture to listen to, but if you are a little sadistic, then you may think about songs to torture other people with; so for all you sadistic people out there, here are the top 5 famous songs that you can used to torture other people.
Number Five: “Really Gonna Miss You” by Smokey Robinson. This song has to be one of the most saddest songs that I know of. How could you not cry or feel like you’ve just lost someone dear to you when you listen to it. Remember in the movie, The Temptations, when ‘blue’ died and they played this song at his funeral? That had to be the saddest part of the movie—well not as sad as when Otis Williams found out his son died… but you know what I mean. It’s definitely a funeral song, and at funerals, we all play the most heartbreaking song—or songs, if your really masochistic—we can think of in tribute to our loved ones. Of course we want to honor the dead, but why can’t we play more uplifting music, instead of torturing ourselves.
Number Four: “Electric Boogie” by Bunny Wailer. We all know this song as the ’Electric Slide,’ This song may be out of style these days, but it always finds a way to creep its way into a party—especially when there are a bunch of old timers that don’t know how to groove to anything new. This song is simply torture because it’s a song that no one young wants to hear or dance to—not to mention that you will have to watch granny try to shake it up and risk loosing her last good hip.
Number Three: “Let it Go” from Disney’s Frozen (Idina Menzel). I feel bad to list this song, because it’s a catchy song and it’s very heartfelt when you think about the ostracized Queen Elsa. Yes, that’s right, I’ve seen the movie, but that doesn’t matter and in no way does it make me responsible for my own torture; when you hear the song play on the radio all the time and every time you are near a child singing it at the top of their lungs, there is no doubt that your ears will begin to hurt and you’ll wonder when it will stop. The song is enjoyable but over-played; the song came out in 2013 and is still played often. It is on its way to becoming a Disney classic, as it has made its way to Disney On Ice along with other of Disney’s most beloved songs—if you’re into Disney music that is.
Number Two: “Barbie Girl” by Aqua. Let’s face it, this song is sickening—I’d rather listen to “Let it Go” all day. Every little girl has run around singing this song, but of course, they would sing a song that they think is about Barbie. However, The song is too sexual, and although the video is colorful and cute, it should not be for children. Does it not bring on a feeling of disgust to hear our little ones singing innocently along to such nonsense because it should.
Number One: “Friday” by Rebecca Black. There are no words for how I feel about this song, except that listening about Barbie taking her clothes off does not sound too bad right about now. From this song, I’ve learned that Friday is the start of the weekend; the day before Friday is Thursday; the day after Friday is Saturday, and the day after Saturday is Sunday. I have also learned that it is a hard decision to choose between sitting in the front seat or the back seat. Rebecca Black received a ton of negative feedback on this song and revealed to the Daily Beast that she was very shocked at people’s reactions. Her song may not have been a good hit, but is still made a big impression and received millions of views on youtube; it is, however, unfortunate that her fame is not due to having any musical talent.
