Get excited about new, never before released music from the late songbird Aaliyah. Mega producer, Aaliyah collaborator, and the late star’s friend, Timbaland, promises unreleased music. It has been 14 years since the death of the “Rock the Boat” singer, and loyal fans have wondered if Timbaland had music by Aaliyah locked away for safe keeping. Well, fans will be happy to know that he does, and he plans to let the world hear Aaliyah’s voice once again. On an Instagram post, Timbaland writes “Attention!!!!! People ask me all the time do I have any babegirl music we haven’t heard!!!!! well the answer is YES!!!!!! TIMBO x BABEGIRL!!!!!” He continues to tease new music in the future. “Sneak peak coming!!!!!”, he enthusiastically writes.

In 2002, Aaliyah’s compilation album was her last project to be released, and it was done so posthumously. There have been a couple of failed attempts to bring Aaliyah to the forefront of pop culture recently. One of them was Drake’s attempt at an Aaliyah-inspired album in 2012. The project was eventually dismissed with Drake stating, “I think the press got out of hand, and they maybe had a different vision for it or something.” Another was the successful but negatively received Lifetime movie, “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B.” The film picked up 3.2 million viewers but was not approved by Aaliyah’s family and was mocked on social media by fans. Tags such as “#LifetimeBiopics” and “#LifetimeBeLike” trended across platforms.

There have also been a couple of successful Aaliyah collaborations as well. Chris Brown paid tribute to Aaliyah with the release of his song “Don’t Think They Know” in 2013. In the video, the words “Dear Aaliyah, we love and miss you. Thank you for inspiring us all,” appear at the end. Aaliyah also appears as a hologram in the video. The song peaked at 81 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Timbaland has also sampled “One in a Million” for his artist, Tink’s, song “Million.” The song has peaked at 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Aaliyah’s influence is still evident in music today. Even after more than a decade of being gone, she continues to inspire the hip hop and R&B community. I know the fans, including me, can’t wait to see what gems Timbaland has been keeping from us. Aaliyah will be topping the charts once again.
