Northside Festival is taking place this week in Williamsburg, New York. The week-long festival, now in its seventh year, is an excellent Brooklyn-based alternative to its more established Manhattan conterpart, CMJ. Attractions include, concerts, film screenings and lectures, although the biggest draw is definitely the music. This year will feature many popular indie rock groups, including Best Coast, Ex Hex and Viet Cong. There will also be a respectable hip-hop contingent. Other highlights of the festival will include no less than five local beer brewers vending their delicious wares, outdoor concerts at McCarren Park, Michael Cera, more than 400 bands representing a spectrum of local, emerging, not-famous-at-all-yet to international and very famous, and, perhaps most exciting of all, the innovation conferences. Speakers at these innovation and design-centered talks, definitely the place to be for those in the know, will focus on entrepreneurship and technology. Young hopefuls will have the opportunity to pitch their start-up and new app ideas, speakers like Adrian Covert of Fast Company, Amy Puliafito of Misfit, and Andy Cohn of the Fader. There will also be a lot of art on exhibit, ranging from the traditional wall-art to more experimental, interactive sculpture and performance art. Musical features include Neko Case, Built to Spill and Run the Jewels.
