Dozens of new albums are arriving this fall, starting with Maroon 5’s V yesterday and promising Ne-Yo, Nick Jonas, and Nicki Minaj as the year goes on. It’s not uncommon to see artists release a single to build anticipation, but sometimes it comes as a nice surprise, especially when fans were not expecting something new. Here are four important and unexpected releases of the week:
1. Late last night, Aphex Twin unveiled a song off of Syro, his first album in 13 years. Fans who have been speculating on the new sounds of the much-anticipated release might be happy to hear Richard D. James dive into his softer side. The track is mostly melodic, chill, and experimental while still falling into the EDM category. In an interview with Rolling Stone, James talked about the genre. “We’re half-cyborg already, whether we like it or not. Everything is based on computers – our whole economy, and most of our creative pursuits, as well. We’re not physically connected to them, but that doesn’t mean they’re not part of our brains.”
2. A surprise surfaced has surfaced from the internet. Rapper Doe B was tragically shot and killed in December of 2013 just as his career was taking off. Just now, a new song has turned up. “I Ain’t Missing” features G-Eazy and Maino, and alludes to a Doe B posthumous project that could arrive this year or next. Listen to it here.
3. Australian pop duo The Veronicas released a lengthy tease for a track from their third album (their first in seven years). “You Ruin Me” is the kind of title we’d expect from the “Untouched” singers, who spent the last two years travelling the world and working on this project. “This song was written and recorded at 1am in the throes of emotion,” said the team in a statement. “We reworked it only a handful of times, leaving it in the raw state it was created.” The full music video is coming September 19th.
4. Nick Cave knows how to get publicity (exemplified by the phone-user-incident at one of his band’s concerts). Australian rockers Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have just released a new track “Give Us A Kiss.” The track was put out alongside a live performance recording of “Jubilee Street.” The new number will be featured in the upcoming movie about Cave’s life, “20,000 Days On Earth.” Filmmakers Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard hadn’t originally planned on using the song, but when Nick and company played it for them, “(It) forced its way into our film,” they said.
