Twenty years after the death of pop superstar and Queen of Tejano Selena Quintanilla, her family has announced that they are in the works of developing a holographic representation of the starlet to release previously unheard music and possibly tour. The announcement was made on April 7th on Selena’s official Facebook page. The Quintanilla family refers to the hologram as “Selena The One,” and it has been described as a “walking, talking, singing, and dancing” replication of the musician known to many by only her first name.
Acrovirt LLC, a Nevada-based tech company that specializes in bringing humanoid elements to their technological projects, has created the hologram. “Selena The One” is expected to release music and embark on a tour in 2018. The family hopes that current celebrities will be able to collaborate with the late musician’s hologram in an effort to transcend time and bring about a new era of the star’s music.
In an effort to fund the project, an official website has been created as well as an IndieGoGo campaign. The family hopes to raise $500,000 in support of the project. The Quintanilla family has been working to develop a Selena hologram of sorts since seeing the Tupac hologram that took the stage at Coachella in 2012. Previous attempts were less successful, and the family has realized the exact cost of creating a successful model. It is currently unclear when the family hopes to have “Selena The One” make her official debut.
Since the news has been revealed, fans have speculated that it may be strange to see the musician’s hologram hitting the road. Selena’s sister Suzette refuted the claims, stating, “by no means is this something that’s creepy or weird.” She went on to explain that the family thinks it is amazing. “A lot of the new fans that did not get to experience what Selena was about will be able to get a sense of her with this new technology.” Although the family realizes that this will by no means replace the musician, they hope that “it’s just something to help her legacy continue growing.”
Selena was murdered by a fan at the height of her career on March 30 1995. After her death, her first crossover album was released posthumously and earned the musician her first number one album on the Billboard 200. Since then, the star’s legacy has been remembered and honored on a regular basis. Earlier this week, it was also announced that the Quintanilla family intended to sue Selena’s record label over unpaid dues from online streaming. These funds could go towards Selena’s hologram if they win the case.
