A few months back famed rapper Eminem announced plans for a tv completion called Total Slaughterhouse that would pit up and coming rappers against each other in a rap battle ala 8 Mile. Today it was announced that Total Slaughterhouse would be coming to Pay-Per-View. In addition to competitions between novices, the show will also feature battle between yet to be named celebrity rappers. It’s clear that Eminem and producer/rapper Joe Budden see Total Slaughterhouse as rap’s version of Boxing matches or MMA fights.
“Rap comes from battling. Theres a certain cloth most MC’s are cut from,” Budden told Rolling Stone. “Why do NBA players still play at Rucker Park? When you are competitive you want to play against all players. You never lose the desire to compete against whoever thinks they’re the best. We want to help put the battle culture on a mainstream platform. As far as Total Slaughter, we want to be the most competitive league in the game! They say Slaughterhouse is the best rap group ever invented, so it’s only right to want Total Slaughter to be the best league ever invented.” Joe Budden is no stranger to reality television, having been a co-star of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop since its 3rd season.
To that Eminem added “I’m a passionate battle fan, so this is something I’ve always thought about doing. I came up battling at the same time I was making records and learning my way around the studio. It’s a little bit different in terms of the kinds of tools you need, but the competitiveness is the same. The times I didn’t win gave me just as much light in the past as when I did. It’s all about your performance.”
Leading up to the first event will be a four part series entitled The Road to Slaughter which will feature eight rappers duking it out for a spot on the actual Total Slaughterhouse event. The Road to Slaughterhouse will initially air of FUSE before being put online at WatchLOUD.com.
The first event is scheduled for July 12th at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom.
