Republican Marco Rubio has recently announced his candidacy to run for the Presidency in the 2016 election. Rubio has practiced as a U.S. Senator in Florida since 2011 and is the most recent Republican candidate to express a desire to represent the Republican ideology. The 43 year old Senator has made his stance on hot topic political concerns very clear over his years in office, but there are still things that you can learn about him as he makes the move for President of the United States. One thing you may not know about Rubio? He is a huge hip-hop fan.
In past interviews Rubio has expressed a serious interest in music, particularly hip-hop. Not only does he enjoy hip-hop, but he has also developed serious opinions about the genre and its many artists. For instance, Rubio claims to be a fan of West Coast rap, though he recognizes that there isn’t quite the distinction that used to exist between East and West Coast sounds. In the battle between Tupac and Biggie, Rubio is solidly in Tupac’s corner due to his more “insightful” lyrics.
The Senator has also expressed an interest and passion for Eminem, displaying his stan card (a title for an overzealous fan that actually stems from an Eminem song) during a previous interview. “The only guy that speaks at any sort of depth is, in my mind, Eminem.” He went on to explain that Eminem’s difficult upcoming is reflected in his music, though he did claim “it’s harder to listen to than ever before because I have a bunch of kids and you just can’t put it on.” Although he is a huge Eminem fan, Rubio is not as impressed by Jay-Z and his heroes, claiming that Jay’s idol Che Guevara “was a racist.”
Rubio has gone one to express opinions about other artists including his friend Pitbull, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj. It turns out that Rubio is a Minaj fan, stating “I like Nicki Minaj, I think she’s very talented. Several of Rubio’s favorite artists make their way onto the list of his three favorite songs, which includes N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton,” Tupac’s “Killuminati,” and Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.”
Another genre that Rubio has expressed an interest in is EDM or electronic dance music. He has cited David Guetta, Axwell Ingrosso, and Swedish House Mafia amongst his list of favorites and has gone as far as to utilize Axwell Ingrosso’s “Something New” in his presidential kickoff rally. Unfortunately for Rubio, it seems as though the band did not appreciate the use of their single. In an official statement the band renounced the use and expressed a desire to stay out of the political race. “Axwell Ingrosso didn’t give their permission for this song to be used and don’t want to be affiliated with a particular party during the upcoming presidential race.” Perhaps Rubio would be better off working with Pitbull or one of his hip-hop idols in the future.
