Petco: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 1)

Petco is one of the most popular places for people to buy pet accessories, pet food, and even pets themselves! However, despite the fact that the chain has spent a considerable amount of time in the spotlight and under the scrutiny of the public eye, there are still some things that many people don’t know. With that in mind, here we present our list of 15 things you probably didn’t know about Petco. Check out part one below, and stay tuned for part two, coming soon!

Number Fifteen: Petco Has a Nearly Ubiquitous Presence

Petco has over 1,000 stores all around the United States, and it also has stores in Mexico. In addition to the brick and mortar stores, it has a strong online presence. The company owns the websites Petco.com, Liveaquaria.com, DrsFosterSmith.com, and Unleashed.com.

Number Fourteen: Its Industry Is Growing Every Day

You might think that with more and more vegans coming out that more and more people would be protesting buying and keeping animals as pets. However, that is far from the case. In reality, more than six million households have acquired a pet over the past nine years, and the company expects the industry will be as big as $92 billion in just three years.

Number Thirteen: Most of Its Sales Are Food

Nice pet food can be expensive, and in fact, pet food comprises nearly 40 percent of the company’s sales. Now, more than ever, pet owners are trying to feed their fur babies the nicest stuff, so it’s a great time to be in the pet food industry.

Number Twelve: Opening More Locations Could Be Risky

Despite the fact that analyses show the company could benefit from new brick and mortar locations, it comes with several risks. In addition to the fact that the online industry is growing, the company can’t really predict whether or not their current locations will be as profitable with even more locations in place.

Number Eleven: Not All of the Animals Are Sold as Pets

In fact, the store sells live mice and rats as food for pet snakes, and it keeps a stock in the store to feed the snakes it hasn’t sold. Many animal rights activists are against this practice.

Number Ten: It Offers Dog Training Services

It’s true! If you adopt a dog from Petco and are nervous about finding a trainer, don’t worry – just use your local Petco!

Number Nine: It Has a Pooch Hotel

Petco’s Pooch Hotels are designed to be something of a daycare for dogs. The hotels also include grooming services. Stay tuned for part two of our list of 15 things you didn’t know about Petco, coming soon!
