Pac-Man has become a beloved pastime for many gamers and even non-gamers over the years. Its addictive design has stood the test of time for generations. Though almost every one of us has played this game at one point or another in our lives, there is still so much that even the most addicted gamers don’t know about this classic arcade game. Number Ten: The Development. Believe it or not, the fact stands that only three people were involved in the production of this praised game. One person focused on the music and sound effects that we have become so accustomed to, and Toru Iwatani worked on planning, designing, and developing the program of Pac-Man with the help of one other programmer.
Number Nine: The Phenomenon. From its release in 1980, the game proved to be ultimately successful. After only 15 months, the Namco/Bandai company had sold over 100,000 machines to arcades. A whopping $1 billion was spent in gamer’s hard-earned quarters at this point.
Number Eight: The Original Name. Oddly enough, the name this game was first released under was Puck-Man. It came from a derivation of the Japanese word “paku”, which translates to “chomp”. To prevent some vulgar jokes and variations of “Puck-Man” (if you know what we mean), the company decided Pac-Man was a better option.
Number Seven: Power Cookies. The little dots that Pac-Man is so eager to snack on are referred to as snack pellets. However, this wasn’t how they started out. They were originally meant to be cookies, with the larger ones serving as “power cookies”.
Number Six: Pac-Man’s Friends. Like every good game in the video game realm, Pac-Man would be incomplete without a storyline. The ghosts that chase our protagonists through the maze actually have names. In Japan, they are known as Fickle, Chaser, Ambusher, and Stupid in correlation with their personalities.
