The Original Power Rangers Are Getting a Reboot

This has definitely been a good year for all of the 90s kids out there. Announcements regarding reboots keep coming out of the woodwork, and millennials are getting nostalgic for the revival of some of the most memorable television shows and movies from the era. Well, turns out it’s time to hear “It’s Morphin Time” once again. The Power Rangers – yes the original Power Rangers – are making a comeback with a new film. The ones who started it all – Jason, Kimberly, Trini, Billy, and Zack – are back and ready to show those bargain brand power rangers what the name brand is all about.

The franchise is usually geared towards a younger audience, but the film will be more mature, coincidentally growing up with the audience that watched it over two decades ago. “I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way,” said Dean Israelite, the film’s director. The script was written by Thor’s Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller, both of whom have also worked on X-Men: First Class.

Although there has been little information released about the plot, we do know that the teenagers will be brought together, each with their own baggage, and will find a way to work together in “exciting ways.” We also have very detailed character descriptions. Jason, the red ranger, is a popular freshman quarterback who wrapped his car around a pole and injured his knee, which ripped his football career away from him. Kimberly, the pink ranger, is the girl every other girl wants to be but then leaves school for six months. When she returns, rumors fly through the halls speculating her reason for leaving and it turns her into a rebel. Trini, the yellow ranger, is the smart, mysterious new girl who longs for a core group of friends. Billy, the blue ranger, is the socially awkward teen who struggles with connecting to others. And finally, we have Zack, the black ranger, the big ball of fun who continues to lie about who he is and where he comes from.

There is no word on who will play the Power Rangers, but the film is slated for release on January 13, 2017. Are you excited to see the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers fight crime on the big screen? And by crime, I mean Rita!
