OMI: 15 Things You Definitely Didn’t Know (Part 2)

We already brought you part one of our list of 15 things you probably did not know about OMI, and now we’re back with part two! Check out eight more fascinating facts about the popular Jamaican singer that you definitely (probably) did not know below. You might be surprised by what you find out!

Number Eight: He Holds a Special Record in the U.K.

It’s no secret that “Cheerleader” is OMI’s biggest hit, but many people don’t know how big of a hit it was on the charts. The song topped the charts in the U.K. for four consecutive weeks, making it the longest stretch of time a Jamaican artist topped the country’s charts in history.

Number Seven: OMI Is Poetic

The singer has said that the aspect of music that fascinates him the most is the poetic one. Specifically, he said, “The poetry side of the music artist fascinated me.”

Number Six: He Can Rap, Too

We all know how well the singer can, well, sing, but did you know he can rap too? In fact, he was first recognized by his peers in high school as a talented rapper.

Number Five: He Appreciates ‘Cheerleader”s Simplicity

OMI knows that “Cheerleader” is catchy but also quite shallow. However, he appreciates the song’s value in its ability to be uplifting without being too complex or deep.

Number Four: But He Doesn’t Want to Be Remembered for ‘Cheerleader’

Instead, OMI wants to use the recognition he’s earned from the hit single to propel people to continue listening to his music. He has said that he wants people to see “Cheerleader” as just the tip of his musical iceberg.

Number Three: Oh Me, Not Oh My

Though the singer spells his name OMI, it’s actually pronounced “oh-me,” not “oh-my.” Make sure you get it right if you ever meet him!

Number Two: He Has Never Met Felix Jaehn

Though Jaehn produced the remix of “Cheerleader” that made him famous, OMI has never met him! We bet he’d have a lot to say to him if he does ever meet him.

Number One: He’s the First Jamaican Artist to Top Billboard’s Hot 100 in a Decade

That last person to do it was Sean Paul with “Temperature” in 2006. We hope you enjoyed our list of 15 things you didn’t know about OMI!
