OMI has quickly become one of the most popular Jamaican singers of all time. However, despite the fact that he has spent a considerable amount of time in the spotlight and under the scrutiny of the public eye, there are still some things that many people don’t know. With that in mind, here we present our list of 15 things you probably didn’t know about OMI. Check out part one below, and stay tuned for part two, coming soon!

Number Fifteen: It Took Eight Years to Make ‘Cheerleader’

Well, sort of. OMI woke up with the melody stuck in his head when he was just 21 years old. At the time, he was living in Clarendon, which is close to Kingston, Jamaica.

Number Fourteen: He’s a Grandma

The name “OMI” literally translates to “grandma” in German. Though OMI isn’t actually a grandma, of course, he chose the name because it’s short for “Omar.” It’s also an old nickname his dad would call him growing up.

Number Thirteen: OMI Grew Up Without a Father

OMI’s father died when he was just nine years old, so he spent the better part of his childhood without a father. His father was also a musician, so he was able to continue his father’s legacy with his own music.

Number Twelve: He Appreciates Strong Women

Rather than have his own “cheerleader” on the sidelines, OMI is interested in dating strong women. He hasn’t had a serious girlfriend in almost a decade, but he’s said that he’s fine with his mom in the number one slot – for now, anyway.

Number Eleven: His Guilty Pleasure Is Car Swag

OMI has used the money he made with “Cheerleader” to trick out his car. He bought new rims for her brown Infiniti and has said he’s giving it a “face-lift.”

Number Ten: He Can Breakdance

It’s true! You may have known that the singer has smooth moves, but what most people don’t realize is that he’s an extremely talented breakdancer as well.

Number Nine: He Loves Being on Tour

Though some musicians become exhausted from touring and would rather stay at home, the Jamaican singer loves being on tour and gets a thrill out of performing it live night after night. Stay tuned for part two of our list of 15 things you didn’t know about OMI, coming soon!
