Nicki Minaj Calls Out MTV For VMA Nominations

Rapper Nicki Minaj may have received two nominations for this year’s MTV VMAs with her hit single “Anaconda,” but she definitely felt that more were deserved. Earlier this morning (July 21) it was revealed that Minaj was in the running to receive Best Hip Hop Video or Best Female Video for her big booty anthem. Minaj hopped on social media to thank MTV for the honor, and she didn’t stop there.

The “Bang Bang” rapper questioned why her Beyonce-assisted video for “Feeling Myself” failed to receive a nomination.  Minaj innocently inquired if the single missed the deadline to be included in the awards show, before expressing her belief that the video was snubbed.  She went on to state that “if I was a different ‘kind’ of artist, ‘Anaconda’ would be nominated for best chore and vid of the year as well,” citing the cultural impact “Anaconda” had upon its release as well as the many records it broke. Thus far MTV has failed to respond to Minaj’s barrage of tweets.

Minaj’s fans been quick to show their support for the rapper by retweeting her original tweets and sharing their own opinion about the nominations.  Many were quick to point out that “Anaconda” broke streaming records on VEVO upon its release. The visual received 19.6 million views in 24 hours, besting Miley Cyrus‘s previous record of 19.3 million.

The video went on to become VEVO Certified, an honor to signify receiving more then 100 million views, a mere 11 days after it’s release. Since then the visual has accrued more than 488 million hits.  Ironically enough, Video of the Year contender Taylor Swift managed to best Minaj’s record with the release of “Bad Blood,” which received 20.1 million views in 2015.  It is possible that Nicki Minaj was referencing Swift’s nomination when she stated that “when the ‘other’ girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination.”

Since its release “Anaconda” has become one of the most successful releases of Nicki Minaj’s career. The single peeked at the number 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, signifying her highest placement as a solo artist on the chart. The song has become a staple in Minaj’s discography and is currently being performed on the American leg of her The Pinkprint Tour.

Although Nicki Minaj feels that she was robbed of a well deserved nomination, the “Monster” rapper isn’t letting that stop her from doing what she does best. After snapping off several messages Minaj revealed that she was currently on the set of a new music video.  She made sure to thank her fans for their support before letting them all know that she had to put her phone down to get to work on her next masterpiece. Fingers crossed that this one gets the recognition that it deserves.
