Maroon 5: ‘Sugar’ Music Video Review

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Maroon 5 crashed your wedding? If you have, then look no further, because their brand new music video for “Sugar” features exactly that. As the third single from their latest album, V, the song stands out as being one of the brightest and most upbeat ones to date.

The video itself glows with radiance, using sunny Los Angeles as the backdrop for its setting. In the beginning of the video, we see the band dressed up in suits and getting ready to drive around the city as professional wedding crashers. The video does break the fourth wall as Adam Levine tells the camera, “December 6th 2014, we’re gonna drive around L.A and hit every wedding we possibly can. It’s gonna be awesome.”

It certainly is, because the weddings featured in the video are actually real. Even without knowing this, there is an organic feeling to the video that gives it its own unique quality. Every time the curtain drops and the band is revealed, we see the bride and groom completely taken aback from the surprise. What comes next is a huge dance party, as all the guests jump out of their seats and begin roaring in astonishment.

There are some close-up shots featuring Levine singing in front of a black backdrop, which feels slightly out of place when placed in the middle of the narrative. Levine’s vocals are about as pristine as they can get, with his falsetto in the chorus sounding effortlessly breezy as he sings, “Sugar, yes please / Won’t you come and put it down on me / I’m right here, cause I need / Little love and little sympathy.”

The song has been likened to Katy Perry’s “Birthday” in terms of its melody and beat, and while it does bear some resemblance to it, it doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s one of the strongest additions to the band’s album. Compared to the other tracks on V, which are more emotionally heavy and serious in nature, “Sugar” gives listeners a song with a fresh vibe, dazzling with its funky bass tunes, danceable rhythm and sugar sweet lyrics.
