Marissa Mayer: 15 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 2)

We already brought you part one of our list of 15 things you probably did not know about Marissa Mayer, and now we’re back with part two! Check out eight more fascinating facts about the CEO of Yahoo that you definitely (probably) did not know below. You might be surprised by what you find out!

Number Eight: She Did Not Feel Ready to Work at Google. In fact, Mayer said she felt “utterly unprepared” to work at Google when she got the job. Mayer graduated from Stanford with a Master’s degree in computer science, and rather than take one of the dozen prestigious jobs she was offered, she went with a little-known tech startup called Google. She was Google’s 20th employee.

Number Seven: She Doesn’t Believe in Burnout. Mayer is famous for getting less than four hours of sleep every night, and in 2013, she said that she doesn’t “really believe in burnout.” She reportedly worked 130-hour weeks while at Google.

Number Six: She Is Not Sheryl Sandberg. While Sandberg has become famous for her “lean in” tactics, Mayer is more about just getting the job done. Sandberg and Mayer actually worked together at Google, and while Sandberg has commented extensively about how she had to “lean in” to be noticed, Mayer has said that she didn’t really have time to notice that she was one of the few female engineers there.

Number Five: She Can Be Shy. Mayer would throw expensive and lavish parties while she was working at Google; however, she had to overcome some crippling shyness before becoming the life of the party. She told Vogue that she fights her urge to be alone by telling herself she can’t leave the party until a specific time.

Number Four: Her Cupcakes Are High-Tech. In 2008, Mayer revealed that she had worked through several cookbooks to test the pros and cons of every recipe. She even put the pros and cons in a spreadsheet!

Number Three: She Is a Huge Fan of SNLMayer revealed in an interview that she would often stay up late to watch SNL growing up, and she has even done SNL impressions in meetings before.

Number Two: She Loves Halloween. In fact, every year there is a line around the block to her house because she gives out giant candy bars.

Number One: She Has Supporters All Over the World. When Mayer first got the job as the COE of Yahoo, she got calls from Jamie Diamond, Nancy Pelosi, and Matt Lauer hoping to interview her. Clearly, Mayer is one of the world’s most influential women.
