Magic! Discusses ‘Rude,’ Touring With Maroon 5

Magic! is fresh off of their big night at Juno Awards on Sunday night. The reggae band’s hit song, “Rude,” won the Single of the Year award, and Magic! performed at the awards show as well. Magic! is currently on tour with Maroon 5, and the band’s frontman, Nasri Atweh, said he is learning a lot from watching Adam Levine on stage. “We’re on tour with Maroon 5 right now which is a huge opportunity. We play in front of 15,000 people a night, and we’re just learning,” Atweh said backstage at the Juno Awards. He continued,”I am actually going and watching Adam Levine every night saying, how is he controlling this and how does he work the stage this big? The guys are also watching their counterparts.”

Atweh said Magic!’s success happened so quickly, but they’re not going to rush into making music. “We’re a new band. We’re not in any rush, but it’s a very quick start and we know that but we’re not in a rush to make it a quick second or third,” Atweh stated. The singer added, “We’re just chillin’, and making the music we love.” Magic! will tour alongside Maroon 5 for their North America run, and they will also travel with the band when they take their tour to Europe and the UK (the worldwide tour concludes in June).

The band is riding high from their Number 1 song “Rude,” and Magic! performed their hit in front of their hometown of Toronto, while on tour with Maroon 5. In order to make the important show date, the band had to fly from Hamilton (Ontario) to the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. “We got in at midnight Saturday. Sony had to put us on a private jet, which we’d never been on before. It went very fast. We had to get there,” Atweh told Billboard magazine.

“Rude” is only the ninth reggae record to reach the Number 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The single also went to Number 1 in Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Poland, Scotland, Slovakia, Venezuela, and the UK. Magic! is the sixth Canadian band, of any genre, to have a chart-topping hit song in the US. “Rude” has managed to sell over three million copies in the US, and 240,000 copies in Canada.
