Yesterday (March 30th), Jay Z launched his groundbreaking music streaming service, TIDAL, after live-streaming an event at which he introduced the company’s co-owners, sixteen fellow musicians. Since its launch, many musicians have shown their support to TIDAL. They have been active on social media, urging their fans to buy into the service and painting their accounts in the bright aquamarine that represents the company; however, some artists are questioning the validity of the project. Chief among the dissenters is Lily Allen.

While watching Jay Z’s livestream, Lily Allen took to social media to share her opinions about the landmark service, taking issue with what was being described as a musical revolution of sorts. The musician pointed out that every single co-signer was a millionaire, and questioning whether the project was supporting the music or their own wallets.

During the TIDAL launch event, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Madonna, Kanye West, Jack White, Arcade Fire, Usher, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys, Coldplay, Daft Punk, Calvin Harris, deadmau5, J.Cole, and Jason Aldean publicly signed in as stakeholders to TIDAL, agreeing to make the company their home for online streaming. Each artist has been offered a 3% stake in the company, effectively creating the first artist-owned streaming site. Sprint has also joined the TIDAL team as the first mobile carrying partner.

Although Jay Z has commented on how TIDAL will benefit musicians at large, Lily Allen questioned if the project would work in reality. When asked to clarify her opinion, Allen expressed a concern for how emerging artists would be able to survive in the market overtaken by the exclusive content TIDAL, a service that requires a paying membership. Allen clarified that “hosting exclusive content from the biggest starts on the planet on a paying platform, while I agree with its intention, I fear it will send people back to pirate/torrent sites.”

Allen went on to clarify that she really didn’t “give a f*** about the music industry” beyond the “few good eggs that work within it.” She expressed her respect for those who have helped her along the way of her own musical journey. The artist released her last album Sheezus in 2014. While she may agree with Jay Z’s claims that “people are not respecting the music, and devaluing what it really means,” it seems as though she is looking for a better resolution than TIDAL.

FDRMX Eyes: Be-Boys is a rock band from Switzerland. The French collective recently released a music video titled “Je Dois Lui Dire/Should I Tell Him.”
